The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
